The Greatest Enemy of God in the 20th Century Just Met Him: His Own Words
The most famous and influential atheist philosopher of the 20th century spent his life teaching that God is a meaningless question. Then his heart stopped for four minutes — and what he saw left him without certainty. This is the true story of A.J. Ayer, logical positivism, and the confession no newspaper ever reported in full.
A.J. Ayer was no ordinary philosopher: for decades he was called the most dangerous man in Oxford for believers, author of the book that convinced entire generations that talking about the soul, the afterlife, or God was literally meaningless. In 1988, after a four-minute cardiac arrest, he publicly wrote that the experience had “slightly weakened” his convictions — but it’s what he privately confided to his doctor, never reported by the press at the time, that makes this story different from any other near-death account.
