He Was Sure It Was a Trick… Then Her Tears Wet His Finger

In July of 1972, a priest in New Orleans got a phone call: a statue was weeping. He said he didn’t believe it. He was the editor of his own diocesan newspaper, a journalist trained to check things, and he knew how easy it is to mistake a drop of condensation for a sign from Heaven.

Three days later he published an article titled “The Tears of Our Lady Wet My Finger.”

This is the story of the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima — carved under the direct supervision of Sister Lucia — and of what happened in Louisiana in the summer of 1972: the photograph that traveled the world on the Associated Press wire, the Protestant newspaper that sent its own reporter and photographer to see for themselves, the sample taken to Charity Hospital, the objections of the skeptics, and the examination ordered by Archbishop Philip Hannan.

And one detail almost nobody knows: it didn’t happen just once.
