She Rose from the Dead at Her Own Funeral—Then Revealed What She Saw

Saint Christina the Astonishing rose from her coffin during her own funeral—and revealed what she had seen in the afterlife. Her story, recorded by Thomas of Cantimpré, tells of souls in purgatory, an encounter with God, and an extraordinary choice: to return to earth to help the departed.

Around 1182, in Sint-Truiden, in what is now Belgium, Christina returned to life during her funeral Mass, according to her medieval biographer. She later described recognizing people she had known among the souls of the dead and receiving a mission of charity, prayer, and penance.

In this video, we explore the life of Saint Christina the Astonishing, also known as Christina Mirabilis, through medieval accounts and the reflections of Saint Robert Bellarmine. Her story invites us to rediscover Catholic teaching on purgatory, the communion of saints, and the power of prayer for the dead.

The extraordinary events are presented as recorded in the hagiographical sources listed below. Reconstructed scenes illustrate the account.
