The True Story of All Souls’ Day: Why Hell Fears November 2nd

Why does the Church dedicate November 2nd to the dead? The answer is a true story written almost a thousand years ago. On a volcanic island in the middle of the sea, a hermit told a shipwrecked pilgrim that he could hear demons crying out because they were losing souls, snatched away from them by the prayers of the monks of Cluny. That message reached Saint Odilo, the most powerful abbot in Europe, and from it came All Souls’ Day.

In this video you will discover the account recorded by the monk Jotsald in his Life of Saint Odilo; the decree that established the commemoration of all the faithful departed; why the prayers of the living truly reach the souls in Purgatory, according to Scripture and the Catechism; why Pope Benedict XV allowed every priest to celebrate three Masses on November 2nd during the First World War; the first Masses of the young Karol Wojtyła, the future Saint John Paul II; and what you can do right now for your loved ones, including the plenary indulgence for the dead from November 1st to 8th.

Write in the comments the name of a loved one you want to entrust to God. Whoever reads it can carry them in prayer.
