Our Lady of Sorrows – Memorial · Gospel reading John 19,25-27.

As Jesus hung upon the cross, surrounded by soldiers and mockers, his gaze turned toward those who had remained faithful. Among them stood his mother, along with other women and the disciple whom he loved. In this darkest hour, with his own suffering immense, Jesus thought not of himself but of those he cherished most.

His words from the cross reveal a profound tenderness. Addressing his mother, he entrusted her care to the beloved disciple, and in turn, he gave that disciple a new role—to honor and protect the one who had given him life. This was no mere practical arrangement, but a sacred bond, a family formed not by blood alone but by love and faith.

What strikes us most powerfully is that Jesus’ concern extended beyond his own agony. Even in his final moments, he ensured that his mother would not be abandoned, that she would have someone to walk with her through the grief that lay ahead. The disciple, for his part, immediately accepted this responsibility, bringing Mary into his household and his life without hesitation.

This passage teaches us about the nature of true love—it is selfless, even unto death. It shows us that relationships matter profoundly to God. The family Jesus established at the foot of the cross reminds us that we are called to care for one another, to see Christ in those around us, and to act with the same sacrificial love that Jesus demonstrated.

As we reflect on John 19,25-27, we might ask ourselves: How do we honor those entrusted to our care? How do we respond when called to serve others in love? In accepting our roles within God’s family—whether as children, parents, friends, or companions in faith—we participate in the same redemptive love that Jesus offered from the cross.
