A Soviet Atheist Was Dead for 3 Days — What She Saw on the Other Side She Wasn’t Supposed to Tell

In a morgue in Soviet Siberia, in 1964, the body of a woman declared dead for three days begins to move again. Klavdia Ustyuzhanina was a committed atheist — an ordinary shop assistant from Barnaul, certain that with death everything simply ends. She had been operated on for terminal cancer, her heart had stopped on the operating table, and one of the most respected surgeons in Siberia had already signed her death certificate.

But three days later, in the freezing cold of the morgue, the impossible happens. And what Klavdia recounts the moment she reopens her eyes — the journey, the stern-faced Lady she would later recognize as the Virgin of Kazan, the teaching about prayer that is born from a pure heart — is something the atheist Soviet state would do everything in its power to silence.

This is the true story of the “Miracle of Barnaul”: a woman who returned from the morgue healed, and who went from a fearful atheist to a tireless witness of faith. Her son Andrei, who was about to be sent to an orphanage, grew up beside a mother “returned from the realm of the dead” and became a priest: it was he who wrote down, word for word, his mother’s account.
