She Saw the Dead, So the Church Sent Her to an Asylum. Then This Happened
In 1940, a sixteen-year-old girl who could neither read nor write was admitted to the psychiatric hospital in Reggio Calabria, in southern Italy. She was sent there by her bishop, on the advice of Father Agostino Gemelli, for one reason only: she said she saw the dead and spoke with them. That girl was Natuzza Evolo, the Italian mystic of Paravati whom thousands of people would visit for seventy years to receive news of their departed loved ones.
In this video we tell the story almost no one knows. We follow the confidential letters between the Bishop of Mileto and Father Gemelli, the same man who years earlier had called Padre Pio a hysteric. Then come the cross of blood that appeared on her Confirmation day, the “foretold death” in front of a crowd, and the two months she spent in the asylum under the eye of Professor Annibale Puca. Finally, we see what happened next: a diagnosis that explained nothing, phenomena that never stopped, and the doctors who observed her for the rest of her life, until her death on November 1, 2009, the Solemnity of All Saints.
