Auschwitz, July 1941. After a prisoner escapes, ten men are chosen to die of starvation in the bunker of Block 11.

When Franciszek Gajowniczek is selected and cries out for his wife and children, another prisoner steps out of the line. He removes his cap, approaches the commandant, and says: “I want to take his place.”

That man was Maximilian Kolbe.

But his decision did not begin in that moment. Thirty years earlier, when he was still a child, Kolbe said that he had seen the Virgin Mary holding two crowns: a white one, symbolizing purity, and a red one, symbolizing martyrdom. He accepted them both.

In this video, we reconstruct his story, the days he spent in the starvation bunker, the accounts of those who witnessed him praying until the end, and the life of the man he saved.

Maximilian Kolbe died on August 14, 1941, on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. His final words were: “Hail Mary.”

If this story touched your heart, leave a prayer in the comments. Let us pray together that we may learn to love even when it costs us, through the small choices we make each day.
