The Miracle of Nagasaki: The Wooden Statue That Survived the Atomic Bomb

Nagasaki, August 9, 1945, 11:02 a.m. The atomic bomb “Fat Man” levels Urakami Cathedral, the largest Catholic church in all of East Asia. Everything is reduced to ashes… except one detail that, to this day, leaves people speechless: the wooden face of the statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

This is the true story of the “Bombed Madonna” of Nagasaki (Hibaku no Maria). The discovery by Father Kaemon Noguchi among the radioactive ruins, the crystal eyes melted by the heat, the scar like a tear pressed into the wood, the thirty years hidden away in a Trappist monastery in Hokkaido, and the return to the rebuilt cathedral — all the way to the silent prayer of Pope Francis in Nagasaki in 2019.

A sign of hope for anyone going through their own “darkest night”: Mary did not flee before the fire. She remained, in the midst of the ashes.
