Tuesday of the Twenty-ninth week in Ordinary Time · Gospel reading Luke 12,35-38.

In Luke 12,35-38, Jesus offers his disciples an image of faithful readiness. He calls them to be like household servants who remain alert through the night, prepared for their master’s unexpected return from a celebration. Their lamps are lit, their garments secured, and their attention focused on the door. They are not merely waiting passively—they are actively vigilant, ready to serve immediately when the moment comes.

This passage speaks to us about the virtue of vigilance in our spiritual lives. Jesus reminds us that following him requires an ongoing state of readiness. We cannot predict when grace will call us to act, when we will face trials, or when God will invite us into deeper conversion. Like those servants, we are called to keep our spiritual lamps burning—maintaining prayer, nourishing our faith, and living with intentional awareness of God’s presence.

What is striking about this teaching is the promise that follows: the master does not come to condemn his attentive servants. Rather, he honors them with an extraordinary reversal of roles. He girds himself for service and invites them to recline while he waits upon them. This stunning image reveals Jesus’s own way of love. He came not to be served, but to serve. When we remain faithful and watchful, we share in his promise—not of burden and judgment, but of being cherished and cared for by God himself.

Whether the master arrives in the second watch or the third, those servants who maintain their vigilance receive the same blessing. There is no reward for exhaustion or despair, only for faithfulness. This encourages us: we need not know the hour or see the full picture of God’s plan. We need only to tend our lamps today, remain present to our duties, and trust that our master sees and honors our faithfulness.

Today, let us examine our own readiness. Are our lamps lit? Are we spiritually awake to God’s call?
