Tuesday of the Twenty-fifth week in Ordinary Time · Gospel reading Luke 8,19-21.

In this passage from Luke’s Gospel, we encounter a moment that seems, on the surface, rather jarring. Jesus’s mother and brothers arrive seeking him, but instead of rushing to greet them, Jesus offers a surprising response. When told of their arrival, he redirects attention entirely, declaring that his true family consists of those who listen to God’s word and live according to it.

At first glance, this might appear cold or dismissive toward Mary and Jesus’s earthly relatives. Yet the Church teaches us to read this passage with deeper understanding. Jesus is not rejecting his biological family—his devotion to his mother is evident throughout the Gospels, and even from the cross he entrusts her care to the Beloved Disciple. Rather, he is expanding our understanding of family itself.

Jesus invites us into an entirely new kinship—one not bound by blood, but by faith and obedience. To be part of his family means actively receiving God’s word and putting it into practice in our daily lives. This is a radical call: we are all invited to become brothers and sisters of Christ through our commitment to his teachings.

For us as Catholics, this message carries profound implications. We are called to move beyond passive belief. Hearing God’s word—whether through Scripture, the teachings of the Church, or the prompting of the Holy Spirit—is only the beginning. The real mark of belonging to Christ’s family is action. We must allow his word to transform how we love, serve, forgive, and live.

Today, as you reflect on this Gospel, consider: Are you truly listening to what God is asking of you? And perhaps more importantly, are you willing to act on what you hear? In doing so, you step into that intimate family relationship Jesus offers—one deeper and more lasting than any earthly bond.
