In Matthew 17:14-20, we encounter a father’s desperate plea for his son’s healing. The boy suffers from a severe affliction, yet when the father brings him to Jesus’s disciples, they cannot help him. It’s a moment of profound disappointment—the disciples, who have already witnessed countless miracles, find themselves powerless.
When Jesus arrives, He acts with authority and compassion, immediately healing the boy. But then comes the teaching moment. The disciples, confused by their own failure, ask Jesus why they couldn’t accomplish what seemed well within their spiritual authority. His answer cuts to the heart of the matter: their faith was too small.
This isn’t about the quantity of faith in some measurable sense. Rather, Jesus uses the image of a mustard seed—one of the tiniest seeds—to suggest that even the smallest, genuine faith can accomplish the impossible. The problem wasn’t insufficient faith; it was faith that wavered or doubted.

Support the Mission →We often face our own “mountains”—obstacles that seem immovable, situations that feel hopeless. A struggling marriage, a wayward child, financial hardship, illness. Like the disciples, we may have tried everything we know, and nothing seems to work. In those moments, Jesus’s words offer both rebuke and comfort. The rebuke asks: Do we truly believe God can act? The comfort assures us: even faith as small as a mustard seed is enough.
The deeper lesson is about trust. A mustard seed’s faith isn’t measured by emotional intensity or dramatic certainty. It’s the willingness to believe, despite doubt, that God is powerful and willing to help. It’s bringing our need before Him, even when we’re afraid we might fail.
Today, examine where you lack trust. Where do you doubt God’s power or goodness? Bring that to Him honestly. Ask for even the smallest seed of faith—and watch what becomes possible.
