In Luke 6:43-49, Jesus offers us a penetrating lesson about the relationship between our inner character and our outer actions. He begins with the image of trees and fruit—a simple but powerful metaphor. Just as we can identify a tree by what it produces, we can recognize a person’s true nature by their words and deeds.
But then Jesus takes a sharper turn, addressing his disciples directly: Why do you call me Lord if you won’t do what I ask? This question cuts to the heart of authentic discipleship. It’s not enough to profess belief or use the right words. Faith without action is incomplete.
To illustrate this truth, Jesus presents two builders. The first digs deep, lays a solid foundation on rock, and builds carefully. When the storm comes—and storms always come—the house stands firm. The second builder skips the hard work of preparing a foundation and constructs directly on bare ground. When disaster strikes, everything collapses.
What is the “rock” Jesus speaks of? It is not passive belief alone, but active obedience. The person who hears Christ’s words and acts upon them builds their spiritual life on something immovable. They do the difficult interior work of examining their heart, rooting out what is false or harmful, and deliberately cultivating virtue.

As we reflect on this Gospel, we might ask ourselves: Am I merely building on sand? Where in my life am I called to go deeper, to do the harder work of genuine conversion? What does it mean for me, in this moment, to not just hear Christ’s words but to live them?
The foundation we choose today determines whether we stand or fall tomorrow.
